Let me start off by saying I am a complete wuss in the art of any adrenalin-induced activities. One of these is lighting fireworks and firecrackers. Blame it on an overly cautious mother and a father who had to have a skin grafting operation after a very bad firecracker incident when he was 10. As a result, I believe the last time I lit a firecracker was when *I* was 10. Or younger. I grew up with December 31 being among my least favorite days, because walking home from late mass would be an exercise in not having a heart attack from the noise and light freakshow that would happen in the streets.
Hence, my big accomplishment (from my point of view anyhow) happened January 1, 2011: lighting my first sparkler in forever.

YES! That’s my hand there holding the sparkler! I have another, more-blurred photo that shows my face, but I like this one better
Does this mean I’ll be trying my hand at bungee-jumping in a few months? I’d like to say HELL NO, but hey, who knows? I will take my progress in this whole do-a-new-thing-a-week as it comes. In the meantime, I think I’ll light another sparkler.

About This Project:
New52 is a project that invites participants to live outside the box a little bit more and try things outside their comfort zone. Sometimes the “new” will present itself to you unwittingly, other times you’ll be seeking it out. My hope is that we can all become inspired by one another’s adventures – perhaps gain the courage to try someone else’s new thing ourselves.
Don’t worry if you’re getting a late start or if you miss a week here and there. New52 isn’t about making a life-altering change every week, it’s about keeping an open mind and embracing little changes in your life.

I don’t even have any harrowing tales of firecracker mishaps and I *still* am too scared to be near them. Sparklers seem like death risks to me. I’m such a patsy! It just seems to me that if something explodes when you light it on fire, you should not be near it, right? Haha.
Yeah! You’ve really captured a great moment. Perfect for the first week.
serously gorgeous blog. you are so creative! xo
Delighted to find your blog, and great job on overcoming your fear so far, especially with all that history. Hoping this is the start of more courageous adventures this year for you!
